Helpful Moving Tips
One month before your move
- Notify your current landlord, in
writing, of your intention to move, even if you are leaving at the end of your lease.
- Contact Pak Mail-U-Haul for
help with short or long-distance moves. Call (925) 373-0568.
- If you need to move something long distance that requires
special handling, such as a vehicle or piano, you may need to make arrangements with Pak Mail for specialty shipping, custom
packaging or crating. If you will need to store anything, Pak Mail can refer you to a local storage facility.
- Talk
to your doctors, dentists, and vets and either arrange to take copies of your records with you or get a release which allow
them to send the records directly to your new health care professionals. If possible, get referrals from your current health
care professionals.
- If you have school-age children, get copies of their school records or make arrangements to have
their records sent to their new school district.
- File a change of address with the post office and IRS.
- Contact
your current utility companies to have services discontinued the day after you move. Contact utility companies in your new
area to have services turned on by the day you plan to arrive.
One to three weeks before your move
- Inventory your belongings and make sure serial number of electronics are recorded. Take photos of high-value
items.
- Purge unneeded items and start packing out-of-season or seldom-used items.
- Plan to use up perishable
foods which can't be moved.
- Contact your insurance company to make sure that your belongings will be covered
during the move and to find out what you need to do to transfer coverage to your new home.
- Cancel your newspaper
subscriptions.
The week before your move
- Arrange for help on moving day
- Pack
your belongings. Pak Mail offers sturdy moving boxes in all sizes, labels, packaging tape, tags and markers.
- Gather
the things you shouldn't pack to keep them from being packed accidentally.
- Confirm your moving services reservations
with Pak Mail.
On moving day
- Make sure to take the things not to pack
(trash) with you.
- Keep track of animals while the truck is being loaded.
- Double-check cabinets, drawers,
closets and storage areas for any forgotten items.
- Try to beat the movers to your house, and have a check ready for
them -- many require payment before unloading.
After the move
- Transfer or update
your driver's license, car registration and insurance.
- Locate doctors, hospitals, veterinarians, and other health
care professionals.
